How Weather Affects Exterior Paint

|

Preparation and planning are critical if you are thinking about painting your home's exterior. Along with proper preparation, planning, and equipment, it is essential to understand what weather conditions can hinder the outcome of your hard work. This blog post will discuss different weather conditions and how they can impact your exterior paint job. Additionally, our professionals at ALLBRiGHT PAINTING want to educate you about the best time to take on an external painting endeavor and what is the best paint to use to withstand the elements. When you're planning your next project, this blog will help you know what weather conditions to avoid to achieve a perfect paint job.

How Can Different Weather Conditions Affect My Exterior Paint Job?

Humidity

Humid conditions are not ideal for painting. This is because the high moisture levels in the air can cause paint to dry slowly, which can cause streaks and unevenness. If you paint in humid conditions, be sure to use paint designed for high-humidity environments. These paints will often have a "low-VOC" label, which means they emit fewer harmful chemicals into the air.

Extreme Heat

High temperatures can hinder your paint job because it causes the paint to expand and contract, which can cause cracking and flaking. Once again, try to avoid painting in direct sunlight or on days when the temperature is above 90 degrees Fahrenheit. If that's not possible, keep a spray bottle of water handy, so you can mist down the area you're painting periodically to help keep the paint from drying too quickly.

Blistering Cold

Just like excessive heat can cause problems with your paint job, so can frigid weather. When temperatures dip below freezing, it can cause paint to freeze before it has a chance to dry—which isn't ideal! To avoid this problem, start painting when temperatures are forecasted to be above freezing for the duration of your project. If you're using latex paint, stir it well before beginning so that any settled solids are evenly mixed in.

As you can see, many factors go into choosing when to tackle an exterior painting project—but don't let that discourage you! With some planning, you can have a beautiful new paint job that will last for years.
